About Preventative Dentistry
Prevention is always less expensive than treatment — and less uncomfortable too.
Preventive dentistry is everything we do to keep your mouth healthy before problems develop. It's the routine visit that catches a small cavity before it needs a root canal. The hygiene appointment that spots early gum disease before it causes bone loss. The x-ray that finds the crack you didn't know was there.

At Victoria Family Dental Centre, we take a genuinely thorough approach to preventive care. You'll never feel like you're being rushed through an assembly line. And we'll always explain what we find and what it means — so you can make informed decisions about your own health.

Preventative Dental Services in Oak Bay

Professional teeth cleaning is the cornerstone of preventive dentistry. Even with excellent brushing and flossing at home, plaque builds up in areas a toothbrush can't reach — and once it hardens into tartar, only a hygienist can remove it.

Our hygienists take their time. Appointments are scheduled for approximately 70 minutes so nothing gets rushed. If you have sensitive areas, dental anxiety, or haven't been in a while, just let us know — we work at your pace.

Your hygiene appointment includes a thorough cleaning of all tooth surfaces and along the gumline, removal of tartar buildup, polishing, a gum health assessment, and personalized tips for your home care routine.

Dental Hygiene Teeth Cleaning & Oral Hygiene Maintenance
A comprehensive exam is how we catch problems early — before they're visible to you, and before they become expensive to fix. We use digital x-rays to see between and beneath teeth, screen for oral cancer at every exam, and assess your bite, jaw, and soft tissues as part of a complete picture.

We see patients of all ages — from children getting comfortable with their first dental visits to adults who've been coming to this practice for decades. If you're looking for one office that can look after everyone in your household, we're set up for that.

Regular exams also give us a history. Over time, we get to know your teeth — which means we notice changes faster and can act on them earlier.

Routine Check-Ups for the Whole Family

Over-the-counter guards are made to fit anyone — which means they fit no one particularly well. They're bulky, hard to breathe through, and uncomfortable enough that most people stop wearing them. A custom-fitted guard is made from an impression of your own teeth, so it fits precisely, stays in place, and is comfortable enough to actually use.

We make guards for two different situations. A sports guard protects your teeth, lips, and jaw from impact during contact sports — hockey, rugby, soccer, martial arts, or anything where a blow to the face is possible.
A night guard creates a barrier between your upper and lower teeth for patients who grind or clench while they sleep, protecting enamel from wear and reducing the jaw tension and morning headaches that often come with it.
Both are quick to fit and ready within one to two weeks.

Custom Fit Sports Guards and Night Guards
Gum disease is one of the most common chronic conditions in adults — and one of the most underdiagnosed. It starts quietly, often with no pain, and progresses to the point where it can cause irreversible bone loss and tooth loss if left untreated.

Signs worth paying attention to include gums that bleed when you brush, persistent bad breath, gums that look like they're pulling away from the teeth, or teeth that feel slightly loose.
If your hygienist flags gum concerns at your cleaning appointment, we offer periodontal therapy right here in our Oak Bay office — from early-stage treatment to ongoing maintenance for patients with a history of gum disease.

A note from Dr. Jun
"The patients I worry about are the ones who only come in when something hurts. By then, we're already playing catch-up. The whole point of coming in regularly is that you never have to."
